Director Francis Lawrence said that using CGI on late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman would have been “catastrophic” to his performance.
Hoffman died of a drug overdose earlier this year whilst the cast and crew of the successful Hunger Games saga took a mini break from filming, and rumors were circulating that Hoffman would be digitally inserted to the scenes he hadn’t completed.
He played the character of Plutarch Heavensbee and according to Francis Lawrence he had only two remaining scenes left to film before his sudden death.
As the Hunger Games director explained to the Huffington Post LIVE,
He had two scenes with dialogue that were left and we decided we didn’t want to try any digital trickery with him, so we rewrote his scenes and gave the dialogue to other actors, he continues. I just think this was the best way to be able to get around such a horrible thing.
Asked to why they didn’t want to do any digital alterations, the director said,
He was one of the greatest actors (I think) of all time, and I just think that to try and fake a Philip Seymour Hoffman performance would have been catastrophic and I would never want to do that. I just think this was the best way to be able to get around a horrible thing.
Phew! That’s good to know and a great tribute to a wonderful actor who is sadly missed.
