New and exciting historical discoveries have been made! Three remarkably well preserved mosaics, dating to the 2nd century B.C.E from the Ancient Greek city of Zeugma, have been found in Turkey.
Zeugma has been a hub of archaeological research and discovery since 2007. This started after the city was excavated from the water, which was being suppressed by the Birecik dam. They have discovered 2000-3000 well preserved houses. These houseshave unearthed troves of previously-unknown knowledge about the city.
Each of these Ancient Greek mosaics portrays different mythological figures. One has the Nine Muses, with Calliope, the muse of epic poetry and arts, in the center surrounded by the others. Another features Oceanus, one of the original Titans and original ruler of the sea, before being replaced by the more well-known Poseidon. His wife Tethys is also featured. They are all portrayed in beautiful colors and retain amazing detail. The third, smallest mosaic’s figure has yet to be identified in a mythological context.
As if this wasn’t fascinating enough, there’s still more of the city to be excavated. This means many more exciting discoveries and works of art will be uncovered soon!
