PopWrapped Remembers Heath Ledger On The Anniversary Of His Death

On the seventh anniversary of his death, we take a look back at the brilliant and diverse career of Heath Ledger, one of many actors taken too soon.

Seven years ago (today), the world lost a star so bright and so great, that even now the loss resonates deeply within the hearts of dozens of individuals, from celebrities to viewers. Heath Ledger passed away January 22nd, 2008 from an accidental overdose. An event that triggered nationwide heartbreak and left Hollywood reeling from such an enormous loss. Today we remember Heath Ledger as an actor and inspiring individual.

A majority of today’s generation remember Ledger for his haunting portrayal as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (second in Nolan’s Batman franchise). However, The Dark Knight is not all that Ledger did in order to leave a permanent footnote in Hollywood’s history and, more importantly, in our hearts.

Ledger was an immensely talented method actor who went from playing courageous William in A Knight’s Tale to the brooding, gay cowboy Ennis in Brokeback Mountain. Ledger proved that he could do it all and he could do it well. His ability to shift roles drastically earned him more than a loyal fan following. Every career decision Ledger made depended on his own satisfaction (which was usually unexpected). Ledger refused to be labeled and consistently strived for roles that varied. From playing a teen heartthrob in 10 Things I Hate About You to a struggling drug addict in Candy.

He held a talent so great that it knew no bounds. He left an everlasting effect on, not only his family, but his fans as well. Everyone of us (whether we want to admit it or not) has a soft spot for a specific actor or actress. Heath Ledger was and will forever be my soft spot.

I remember (quite vividly) strolling down the aisles at our good ol’ Blockbuster, searching aimlessly for a movie that would catch my eye. It was during this moment that I stumbled upon a life-sized poster of A Knight’s Tale. This was the moment my 8-year-old-self found her favorite actor, I just hadn’t realized it yet. Heath Ledger will always be my favorite actor and I’ll spend the anniversary of his sdeath the same as I’ve done in previous years; by celebrating the life he lived.

“My movies will live on – for people to judge what I was as a person. I just want to stay curious”- Heath Ledger
