Detroit Police Officer Walks Free After Fatally Shooting 7-Year-Old Girl

Detroit police officer Joseph Weekley will walk free after two mistrials on the count of murder. Read on for more details.

Officer Joseph Weekley, a Detroit police officer who shot and killed an innocent, sleeping 7-year-old girl will walk free following two mistrials. Kym Worthy, Wayne County Prosecutor, released a statement that the police officer would not be tried a third time for the shooting:

“Today we personally informed the family of Aiyana Stanley–Jones that we have made a decision that we would not be going to trial for a third time in the Joseph Weekley case.”

Accused of killing young Aivana Stanley-Jones in 2010 during a police raid gone wrong, his first trial, back in 2013, ended in a mistrial. Last year, a second trial was held, but the jury was again unable to decide if Weekley was guilty of killing the girl.

Weekley maintains that he only shot his gun because Stanley-Jones’ grandmother, Mertilla Jones, struck his gun. Aivana was asleep on the couch next to her grandmother when the shooting occurred. Her grandmother denies touching the gun.

This case comes at the heels of a number of other police killings of black individuals who are unarmed, including Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner in New York City.
