Grammy- and Oscar-nominated songwriter, Rod McKuen, died Thursday (Jan. 29) in Beverly Hills. McKuen passed away at a rehabilitation center, where he had been recovering from pneumonia. His half brother Edward McKuen Habib and his producer friend Jim Pierson confirmed that the songwriter’s health had been failing.
Rod was not only a songwriter, he was also a well-known poet, composer, and singer. McKuen was nominated for an Oscar twice, once in 1970 for his song “Jean” from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and in 1971 for the movie A Boy Named Charlie Brown. He also won a Golden Globe and a Grammy nomination. McKuen wrote songs with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, and Barbra Streisand. He also had over 30 books of his poetry published in his lifetime, the bestselling one being Listen to the Warm, which won a spoken-word Grammy.
