Neil Young, meet Neil young.
On Tuesday, February 3rd, Neil Young was the musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and for the first time performed with Fallon’s classic, spot-on impersonation of himself.
Jimmy Fallon has been doing his Neil Young schtick for almost five years, performing songs like Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” and the theme to The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air in character as the iconic singer, but despite Young’s previous appearances on the show the two have never performed together until now.
Neil Young and young Neil Young, played by Fallon, dressed identically to perform a version of Young’s classic “Old Man”, a rendition that was surprisingly faithful to the original. Young would later perform his latest single, “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?” accompanied by The Roots.
Neil has said many times that he’s a fan of Fallon’s impersonation of him, and did again during this visit. “I saw you doing me before and I always thought it was fun,” he said during the interview portion.
Young appeared on The Tonight Show last year, but rather than performing with Fallon did a version of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” while Jack White cut it onto vinyl in front of a live audience.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs at 11:35 pm weeknights on NBC.
