Harmonix Announces Rock Band 4

On March 5, Harmonix announced the return of its wildly popular music video game series Rock Band with the next installment, Rock Band 4.

The Rock Band franchise is finally making the leap to next gen consoles.

Today (March 5), Harmonix, the team behind the massively popular Rock Band series of video games, announced that they are partnering with Mad Catz to bring Rock Band 4 to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While no release date is set, visitors to this weekend’s PAX East expo will be able to pre-order an exclusive Penny-Arcade-themed guitar controller.

“With Rock Band 4, we’re doubling down on the energy and excitement of playing music live with your friends,” says Harmonix Chief Executive Officer Steve Janiak. “Focusing on the core experience that our fans have told us they love allows us to evolve established gameplay in meaningful ways that we can’t wait to share with everyone later this year.”

One of the coolest features of RB4 is that in addition to the included soundtrack and the obligatory downloadable songs that will follow its release, all of the songs that gamers have previously purchased since the original Rock Band in 2007 will not only be supported, but can be downloaded to the new console for free. That is a back catalog of over 2000 songs!

Readers, I don’t know about you, but this is probably the best gaming news I’ve heard in a long time. The Rock Band series gets my vote as the most fun party games you can play on a video game console, as evidenced by the many drunken nights I’ve spent belting out Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga while my friends hammer away on a plastic guitar. If this latest installment is anything like the previous gems Harmonix has supplied, it looks like those nights will be coming back.

More details on the new features of Rock Band 4 have been promised from Harmonix to start rolling out in May.
