An upstate New York high school school is apologizing for broadcasting the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic during Wednesday’s  (March 18) morning announcement.

In a press statement, the Pine Bush High School principal Aaron Hopmayer did apologize in response to the  complaints by residents who had lost family in Afghanistan. However, Hopmayer did mention that it was recited as a part of National Foreign Language Week, which celebrates the various “races, cultures and religions that make up this great country and our school district.”

District Superintendent Joan Carbone has been cited as mentioning that the Arabic reading has practically “divided the school in half,” but added that the pledge will only be read in English only from now on, as outlined in state Department of Education regulations.
