It Could Be “Game Over” For Earth In First Trailer For ‘Pixels’

Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage, and Josh Gad star in a war against alien-controlled video game characters in the first trailer for Pixels.

Adam Sandler films haven’t had much success critically or commercially in recent years, so we’ll have to see if the curse is finally broken in his new vehicle, Pixels.

The premise at least seems entertaining. In 1982, video games were sent into space as part of a time capsule to represent the culture of Earth to alien civilizations. Somehow, aliens get a hold of the games and view them as a threat of war. The aliens decide to be proactive and strike first, turning our own “weapons” against us in the form of giant monsters based on ’80s game characters such as Donkey Kong and Pac-Man.

So who can Earth turn to for salvation? A crew of classic Arcade game pros, of course, played by Sandler, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage. The film’s other stars include Kevin James and Michelle Monaghan.

The film’s director, Chris Columbus, certainly has a lot of box office winners to his name. Columbus has been at the helm of several huge hits including Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and two Harry Potter films.

Even if it looks cool, Pixels won’t deliver if it isn’t funny. The jokes in the trailer aren’t that impressive, but the emphasis there seems to be more on story set-up, action, and showcasing the video game monsters. Maybe the actual movie will deliver some bigger laughs.

Watch the trailer below and let us know if you plan on pumping your quarters into Pixels!
