When the Royal Caribbean’s luxury ship the Oasis docks in Fort Lauderdale, FL, the crew of 2,140 people has only a short 12 hours to freshly restock and re-board the ship. Docking at 6 am, passengers have until 10:30 am to depart the ship. The next round of vacationers (6,000 people per voyage) board at 4:30 pm, so it’s go-time for the crew. 12,000 suitcases are removed, beds are stripped and remade, bathrooms cleaned, pianos tuned, and trash taken out.
They restock 24,000 bottles of beer, 1,400 bottles of champagne, 15,000 pounds of potatoes, 9,000 pounds of tomatoes, and 9,000 soda cans to last one week at sea. Efficiency is down to a science on the Oasis Turnaround Day: suitcases are marked with colored tags, sheets and towels are separated in colored bags, and each of the 189 maids are responsible for 15-17 rooms. Other ships, like the Oasis’s twin the Allure, dock at different times in the same port, so it is crucial to stay on schedule. A lot of hard work goes into making cruises the luxury vacation they are, but a lot of work also goes into making sure this business remains savvy.
