Ceremonies To Mark The Reburial Of England’s Late King Richard III Begin

It’s been far too long that this royal hasn’t been in a proper grave, so the ceremonies to give King Richard III a rightful rest have begun in Leicester.

Ahead of his reburial, the coffin containing King Richard III’s remains has arrived at Leicester Cathedral for public viewing. The coffin of the late king, which is made of English oak, will remain on display until Thursday, when he will be reinterred following a ceremony.

Ceremonies were held throughout the day for the monarch as descendants of the king participated. The procession began at Fenn Lane Farm, the closest spot to where it is believed the king was killed. Other ceremonies were held at Bow Bridge and Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre in Leicester.  City mayor, Peter Soulsby, also said a few words:

“It was from Leicester in 1485 that Richard rode out to battle and it was to Leicester that he returned, defeated, slung ignominiously across the back of a horse. It’s now our opportunity to put it right and to make sure this time that it’s done with dignity and honour.”

Not everyone is pleased with the internment, however, and the ceremonies that occurred today were even described as a “pantomime” according to Louise Hollingsworth on Facebook. She said:

“The more I see of the undignified, money-grabbing pantomime surrounding King Richard III in Leicester this weekend, the more incensed I become.”
