It’s a story with a happy ending, even if that happy ending took almost fifty years.
76-year-old Zella Jackson Price has just met her daughter, Melanie Diane Gilmore, for the first time since giving birth to her forty-nine years ago.
After giving birth at a St. Louis hospital, Price was erroneously told a few hours later that the baby had died. The newborn was adopted by another family.
The unusual story was uncovered after Gilmore’s children used some clues from her adopted parents to begin a search for their mother’s birth parents. A DNA match eventually confirmed Price, a well-known Gospel singer, as Gilmore’s mother.
The two families were overjoyed to find one another, and mother and daughter finally reunited in person on April 9. Gilmore’s birth father had died, but Gilmore was also able to meet her birth brother.
While the families are currently celebrating their reunion, they also plan to continue their quest to find out exactly what happened at Homer G. Phillips Hospital that fateful day so many years ago.
