Furious 7 Races Past $1 Billion, Sets New Record

Furious 7 continues to dominate in its third week, hitting the $1 billion mark and setting a new record for the milestone. Paul would be proud.

Furious 7  has been leaving everyone in the dust since its debut on April 3. It was number one for the third straight weekend.

Box office predictions said it would be hitting the $1 billion mark globally as well, and it sure did–before the weekend has even officially ended!

The latest in the beloved Fast franchise accomplished this feat in just 17 days, making it the fastest ride to a global billion ever, according to Rentrak.

The Avengers and Avatar now fall just behind, at 19 days each.

“Audiences have a true emotional connection to this movie and a big part of that is support for Paul Walker. But this film is also the true popcorn film experience. This is why people go to the theater to take a ride like this,” Rentrak’s senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.

Even its soundtrack is dominating. It rose to #1 on Billboard’s album chart, and its Paul Walker tribute track, “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, knocked Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars collaboration from its 14-week run as #1 single.

Furious 7 now boasts a $294.4 million total nationwide.
