Popular Boys-Love Manga Super Lovers Finally Gets An Anime Adaptation

The popular boy-love manga “Super Lovers” will be getting an anime adaptation! No word yet on whether it will be a full show or an OVA, but here’s hoping!

The highly popular boys-love manga (and one of my personal favorites) Super Lovers is finally getting an anime adaptation. This exciting announcement was made through a flyer in the latest issue of Ciel magazine. It’s unclear if the adaptation will be an anime series or just a one-off ova (original video animation). The date for the project was also left unannounced. I sincerely hope this is an anime series rather than an ova. The series could easily be made into a 13-episode season because it has 7 volumes of material to cover.

Super Lovers by Miyuki Abe (Hakkenden) tells the story of the progressing relationship between adoptive brothers Haru and Ren. Haru meets Ren when he goes to visit his mother oversees and finds out that she spontaneously took Ren in. Ren, who is a bit of a wild-child, would rather spend his days out in the wilderness with his precious dogs instead of socializing with others. Haru’s mom asks Haru to civilize Ren the best he can which leads to the forming of a very precious and unique bond. Although Haru and Ren’s relationship starts out purely platonic, as the years go by and the two grow up they begin to realize they feel something “more” for one another.

Super Lovers debuted in Kadokawa’s Ciel Magazine in 2010, but was soon shifted over to Kadokawa’s Emerald magazine in May of 2010. The seventh volume of this sweet, slow love story was released in July last year. Super Lovers has not been licensed in North America, but when I spoke to SuBLime workers at Yaoi-Con last year they mentioned that the series is heavily requested to them , for licensing, by fans. Super Lovers is a bonafide gem; a gem that I hope gets licensed ASAP (please SuBLime? Juné?).

Miyuki Abe, the creator/writer and artist of Super Lovers, is hugely popular for another work of hers titled Hakkenden: Tōhō Hakken Ibun, which spawned two highly enjoyable anime series. Hakkenden was licensed for video distribution by Sentai Filmworks under the title Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East. Hakkenden is an extremely enjoyable series that left me craving for more; sadly, Hakkenden’s manga has yet to be licensed. Abe is clearly a talented mangaka, whose works should be licensed. With Hakkenden’s anime being brought here already, maybe the manga won’t be far behind.

Super Lovers still has a shot at getting licensed as well, due to its overwhelming popularity and future anime adaptation.
