Joss Whedon Explains Loki’s Absence From ‘Avengers’ Sequel

Loki fans can dry their tears after noticing their favorite character was missing in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon assures Loki will be on the Blu-Ray.

Loki fans worldwide rejoiced when Idris Elba let slip that he and Tom Hiddleston would be reprising their roles as Heimdall and Loki for brief appearances in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The hearts of those same Loki fans were crushed, however, when the god of mischief was a no-show in the actual movie.

Now director Joss Whedon is explaining why the immensely popular character ended up on the cutting room floor. Discussing the Loki scene, Whedon told MTV:

“We did shoot something and it didn’t play. The movie has so much, is so filled and we didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it but I understood the decision, ‘Now there are too many voices in the chorus.’ At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing.”

Members of Loki’s army needn’t start planning an attack on Marvel studios just yet, however. In an interview with Den of Geek last week, Whedon confirmed that the cut Loki scene would end up on the extras of the film’s Blu-Ray release:

“It’ll be in the DVD extras. [Loki will be] being charming as always.”

Most have assumed that the extra Loki footage will be part of Thor’s vision of Asgard in chaos, the scene Heimdall appears in during the theatrical version.

It won’t just be the trickster god providing more juiciness (and more male eye candy) to the Blu-Ray version of Age of Ultron. Whedon also revealed that the extras “are going to be enormously popular” including “more shirtless Thor.”

Even without Loki, Avengers: Age of Ultron is pretty damn good. Though I have to say, I’ll be much more excited when that Blu-ray hits stores. Anything that’s good only gets better when it’s sprinkled with a smidgeon of Loki’s sorcery.
