The film industry and film fans around the world are today (July 10) mourning the passing of one of the world’s greatest actors after it was announced that Omar Sharif, famed for his roles in Lawrence Of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, has passed away at age 83.
His agent, Steve Kenis, said in a statement:
“He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo.”
Sharif’s The 13th Warrior co-star Antonio Banderas took to Twitter to express his condolences:

Director Roland Emmerich, who worked with Sharif on the 2008 movie 10,000 B.C., also posted a message:
Very saddened by the passing of Omar Sharif. Blessed that I was able to work with such a legend. Love to the family.

Earlier this year, Sharif’s son Tarek-El-Sharif announced that his father had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, saying:
“He still knows he’s a famous actor. The loss of memory affects above all specific things, details like when he was in a specific place or who he acted with in a specific film.”
During his career, Sharif won Golden Globes for his roles in Lawrence Of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. He was also nominated as best supporting actor for Lawrence.
