You read it correctly: Beach goers Save Great White. It seems counter-intuitive, but it is what happened.
It is believed that the shark was chasing after seagulls and ran ashore. Animal rescue staff, the Harbormaster, and beach goers revived the shark by pouring buckets of water on it. Shark experts had to move quickly as Great White sharks need to keep moving in order to force water over their gills. The shark was then tied to a boat and dragged into the water.

The boat was used to essentially swim for the shark and after 30 minutes they thought the shark had died. Luckily, the tail began to move and they towed the shark out to where it will hopefully avoid the beach in the future, which is a good thing as the feisty critter bit the rescue boat twice on the journey out.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy tagged the shark and will monitor its progress. This extremely rare occurrence is an interesting twist since Chatham is not all that far from the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where Jaws was filmed.
