The Powerful “Suffragettes” Trailer Is Here

“Suffragettes” tells the tale of the movement in Britain during the turn of the century which fought for women’s right to vote. The film debuts October 23.

“All my life I’ve done what men told me. Well, I can’t have that anymore.”

The powerful trailer for Suffragettes has dropped, and it is a typically star studded affair.

The historical movie, based on real events, depicts the story of the Suffragettes, a group of women who fought for the right to vote in the United Kingdom.

The film stars Carey Mulligan as Maud, a woman who becomes weary of a world where she is denied rights, and ultimately becomes one of the leaders of the Suffragette movement . The cast is impressive, with Helena Bonham Carter and reigning queen Meryl Streep playing two of the leading ladies, and Brendan Gleeson (The Guard, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) also making an appearance.

The film, in fact, is bringing Meryl back to her Iron Lady  roots as she collaborates once again with screenwriter Abi Morgan in Sarah Gavron’s drama about the long, and often violent British movement to fight for equal voting rights at the fin de siècle.

Streep will play Emmeline Pankhurst, an important player in the Suffragette movement, and in the film she and her fellow activists play a dangerous game to fight fire with fire in order to achieve their rights and defy the norms.

In the film, the Suffragettes use civil disobedience and fight against the patriarchal norm, which escalates and sparks debate and controversy across the nation.

In a particularly chilling scene from the trailer, Carey Mulligan vehemently declares: “We break windows, we burn things, ‘cause war’s the only language men listen to.”
