Tom Daley: “Don’t Label Me!”

Tom Daley spoke the London’s The Guardian about coming out, his relationship with Dustin Lance Black, and labels.

Tom Daley rose to international fame during the London 2012 Olympics, with his fame later sky-rocketing further towards the end of 2013 when he came out via a YouTube video. Daley, 20, who is currently in rigorous training for the World Aquatics Championship next week and 2016 Rio Olympics, has recently stated that he has always has been attracted to men, but still has sexual feelings towards females.

In an interview with The Guardian, Daley, the youngest Gold Medal winner at the European Championship, has confirmed that current boyfriend, writer and filmmaker, Lance Dustin Black, is his first relationship with a man. Meeting in 2013 in Los Angeles, Daley had “never had feelings for a person along those lines”, but has always thought in the back of his mind that he was attracted to men and upon meeting Black “lots of things started to make sense.”

Daley’s “Something I Want To Say” video (his coming out video, which can be watched here) currently has over eleven and half million views, and he has become an active member of the LGBT community. In June this year, he joined forces with Switchboard, an LGBT helpline. He is firm in stating that although he and Black are two years into a relationship (and are even discussing children), he does not put a label on his sexuality, and at 20 years old with the world at his feet, why should he?
