Wednesday brought about the second to last time that Jon Stewart will officially host The Daily Show. It’s a journey that started 16 years ago, and his brainchild has bestowed upon us some of the most recognizable stars in the comedy world.
Steve Carell, Ed Helms, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Larry Wilmore, Kristen Schaal, Michael Che, Olivia Munn, Samantha Bee, Rob Corddy, Rob Riggle, Trevor Noah; quite the extensive and impressive list.
While they have all gone on to tour Hollywood and some to gain their own shows, Stewart held down the desk. Taking shots, poking fun, and pointing out the flaws of news coverage.
So it was most fitting that he opened the show by recapping various topics from ISIS, Fox News, and race relations. He stated that in his tenure that they had dismantled all of these problems through video clips, only to be refuted by videos that showed those problems still exist.
The next segment was a montage, Jessica Williams, Jordan Klepper, and Hasaan Minhaj came on stage to relay the fact that Stewart would be remembered for being on television from the hours of 11:00 to 11:30, except that summer when they saw taller, British you.
Following that was clips throughout the years of Stewart doing that which has made us cherish his presence as a voice to combat the constant crap-fest that news networks broadcast.
The episode closed with an interview involving Louis C K. The two didn’t really discuss anything, instead we got to see two comedians who came up in popularity together, rehashing the beginning of their journey.
Closing out with a Moment of Zen, we are left with one last episode with Jon Stewart. While The Daily Show will continue without its creator, his voice will be replaced with Trevor Noah.
Bittersweet, yes. Sad, maybe a little. The testament of Stewart is not simply his ripping of the news, but rather his willingness to voice the frustrations with government on such a big stage. Not afraid to back down, to stand up, to demand action and change. To call elected officials on their lies, stand up for the troops, and stand up for those who are being wronged.
