As Straight Outta Compton continues to dominate the US box-office and as it prepares for release in Europe, acclaimed Selma director Ava DuVernay took to Twitter at the weekend to share her thoughts on the movie.
Whereas a lot of people might write 140 characters on a film they’ve seen, DuVernay’s message took multiple postings to get across:
I saw @ComptonMovie last night w/ friends at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in South Central with a beautiful, alive, invested audience.

Invested because many of them, like me, were there. Teens at the very time and in the very place depicted on screen. It had better be right.

And damn, they got it right. Under @FGaryGray's brilliant direction + @MattyLibatique's gorgeous cinematography, I was transported back.

I saw the militarized Batterrams again. Rolling up our streets like invaders in a war. My friend asked, "Is that real?" Yep. That happened.

She went on to write about her own first-hand experiences and memories of incidents she had been witness to over the years growing up in Compton, and described how director F. Gary Gray had so wonderfully captured:
“…the plight of the black artist.”
She ended her postings by simply declaring the film to be:
“fantastic.”
The movie tells the story of how the N.W.A formed and then later disbanded. The cast includes O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre and Aldis Hodge as MC Ren.
