Despite the number of high-profile mass shooting incidents in the United States, gun control has not made any major strides in the country. This is obviously due to the deeply ingrained gun culture and the political power held by the National Rifle Association.
So it comes as a surprise that incidental market forces have taken out the selling of assault-style rifles in America’s biggest retailer.
Yes, Walmart has announced on Wednesday that they will no longer be stocking the high-powered rifles on its American stores.
The retailer has been the target of public pressure for years to remove the assault rifles , but the company has made it clear that the decision to remove the items from its store stems from low sales rather than gun politics.“It was done purely based on customer demand,” said Walmart spokesman Kory Lundberg.
Despite the removal of the assault rifles, Walmart still remains the nation’s largest seller of guns and ammunition, and the decision came before the fatal Virginia shooting where a reporter and cameraman were shot and killed in front of a live television audience.
But still, gun control experts are hoping that this move by Walmart will inspire other major retailers to follow suit.
