Serena Williams Does Not Have To Smile For You

Serena Williams shut down a reporter who wanted her to smile. This speaks to a larger phenomenon where others wish to control the visuals of public women.

No, even when she wins a match or a slam, Serena Williams does not have to smile for you.  If she doesn’t feel happy or feel like expressing it in front of you, she doesn’t have to.  In fact, no woman does.

After her win against her sister Venus on Tuesday, reporters at a press conference wanted to know why she wasn’t smiling.  Surely, there must be a reason for her lack of smile — and, surely, there must be something they can say to make her change her expression!

Sometimes women are tired, especially when they just played a grueling match of tennis against a loved one on an international platform.  Sometimes women are conflicted, especially when they just got ahead at the expense of someone else, as happens in every sporting tournament.  Sometimes women just don’t want to smile.

Regardless, some people think they can force women to smile, yelling at women they don’t know in public and shaming them with terms like ‘Resting Bitch Face’.  I can’t imagine anyone doing the same to random men in the street, and I certainly can’t imagine that anyone would ask a male athlete to smile after a big match.
