In the first Star Wars film, Obi-Wan Kenobi described the Force as “an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together”, so it seemed fitting that the continuation of the beloved franchise would shoot in a location teeming with life.
And thus production is set to return at the protected Irish island of Skellig for additional shooting.
But for those who are worried about the environmental impact of a full blown Hollywood shoot in the home of the world’s second largest Northern gannet colony. Fret not the Irish government has provided assurances:
“In considering Lucasfilm’s request to carry out limited filming on Sceilg Mhichíl this month, I have balanced the positive benefit it will reap for the Irish film industry and the South Kerry region with the need to ensure that the island’s unique environment and wildlife are fully protected.” said Irish Minister Humphreys in a statement .
This isn’t of course the first time Star Wars did film work in the island, shooting happened last year, and Minister Humphreys pointed out that no damage was done “Last year, I witnessed first-hand the stringent ecological and environmental safeguards and mitigation measures put in place by my Department, as well as by the OPW, to ensure that this wonderful UNESCO World Heritage site and its outstanding birdlife were fully protected” Minister Humphreys said, and he promised that this will continue this year.
So all in all, the environment is protected, filming will provide publicity as well as income for the island, and we get another Star Wars film, now that is a win-win!
