Ellen Page walked the red carpet at the premiere of her latest film, Freeheld, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The actress looked happier than we’ve seen her in a while. Is it maybe because of the lovely lady on her arm?
Page took the opportunity of the Freeheld red carpet — since the film deals with the fight for LGBT equality — to bring her relationship with Samantha Thomas to light. “I’m in love,” Page stated simply, adding that “walking down the carpet holding my girlfriend’s hand is pretty special.”
Freeheld also stars Julianne Moore and tells the story of police detective Laurel Hester (Moore) and her partner Stacie Andree (Page) who fought for domestic partner rights in New Jersey after Hester was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Page attributes her coming out in February 2014 to her work on the film.
Page recently confronted US presidential hopeful Ted Cruz about LGBT equality, and the conversation was, er, less than fruitful. Senator Cruz does not seem to understand the difference between acceptance (what LGBT folks want) and tolerance (what LGBT folks get, at best) from many of their Christian brothers and sisters. Cruz wants to say, “Murder is murder is murder, and it’s wrong” (5:16 in the video below), but he doesn’t want to think that “Persecution is persecution is persecution, and it’s wrong”; persecuting members of the LGBT community around the world clearly isn’t as bad as the ‘persecution’ right-wing Christians feel they are suffering in the US.
