Susan Sarandon raised eyebrows by bringing the ashes of Timothy Leary to Burning Man and, before burning the ashes, led a parade throughout the festival.
Leary, who was well-known for performing a number of experiments with LSD, passed away in 1996. Most of his ashes were shot into space, but he did leave ashes to some of his close friends, including Sarandon, who chose to honor her late friend at the festival.
Sarandon shared the details of this during a visit to Kimmel this week, and since, a video has appeared showcasing the event. In the video, Sarandon speaks about Leary, calling him a “prophet” and telling the crowd, “For anyone who doesn’t know who Timothy Leary is, and you’ve taken acid, you should be ashamed of yourself.”
She also said, “Timothy Leary, for those of you who don’t, was the leader of the whole thing to take LSD away from the CIA and make it a means of exploration for everybody … He’s called the father of this movement.”
