The Muppets Re-Boot Is Already Bringing Controversy To ABC

One Million Moms is claiming that the ABC re-boot of the classic television show The Muppets is perverted and not appropriate for children.

The reboot of the classic television show, The Muppets, premiered on ABC Tuesday night, but not everyone was impressed with the content.

The pro-family group, One Million Moms, is already calling on the network to cancel the show due to the puppets being “perverted” and the show’s more adult-themed content.

The promotional campaign for the show featured an alleged break-up between Kermit and Miss Piggy, and Fozzie Bear’s relationship and implies that Miss Piggy has become a bit promiscuous. The tongue-in-cheek humor of the promotional campaign also showed Kermit wearing only a scarf, with the words “Finally, a network TV show with full-frontal nudity.”

The 30-minute television show has been touted as a “mocumentary-style” show that is similar to “30 Rock,” and will feature confessional cut-aways and quick-zoom shots, as well as grown-up topics, and this is where One Million Moms finds the problem. They are so irked, in fact, that they have started a petition to warn parents and to urge them to call ABC to take the show off of the air.

The petition reads:

1MM (One Million Moms) suspects there are going to be a lot of shocked moms and dads when they discover that the family-friendly Muppets of the 1970s are no more. It appears that no subject is off limits. The puppet characters loved by kids in the 1970s and 1980s and beyond are now weighing in on abortion and promiscuity.

The group also claims that ABC has ruined The Muppets.

Though it is true that there is an adult feel to the show, it could be that ABC is not aiming at children and families, but instead at Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, who are well known to love the nostalgia of their youth. As for the petition, it is likely that the only thing it will do is bring more publicity to the show, as we find no evidence that ABC is considering cancelling it any time soon.
