It’s no surprise that there’s recent talk of Johnny Depp being nominated for an Oscar for his chilling performance as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. Though he’s never won, he’s been nominated for Academy Awards for his work in Finding Neverland, Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and, of course, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Despite this, Depp claims he has absolutely no interest in winning an Oscar.
On Friday, at the premiere of Black Mass at the London Film Festival, Depp said: “I don’t want to win one of those things ever.” Why not?
I don’t want to have to talk. They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times. A nomination is plenty.
His fans are very much aware that Depp doesn’t need an Oscar to be recognized as a great actor. It seems that Depp, himself, recognizes this, as well. “The idea of winning means that you’re in competition with someone,” Depp explained, before adding, “I’m not in competition with anybody.”
