Ian McKellen recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly for an interview on a part that has been played by more actors than you can imagine. Sherlock Holmes has been played by countless actors, most recently Robert Downey Jr and Benedict Cumberbatch. McKellen brought the famous detective back again in Mr. Holmes which depicted the older version. McKellen spoke on how he had to prepare for the role of two different versions of Sherlock Holmes: the aging one and the one still in his prime.
Here’s what McKellen said about the opportunity: “An actor would jump at that possibility, of playing two parts.” McKellen played the old Holmes at the age of 93 who reflected on his younger years while portraying both. McKellen had to be physically aged to play the 93-year-old Holmes and they did a fine job with it. McKellen joked that he may have worn more makeup to play young Sherlock. I can’t wait to watch that movie!
