Last Week Tonight and host John Oliver have responded to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s allegation that he was invited to appear on the show, but turned them down. Trump made the assertion via twitter in a post directed to The Hill, a non-partisan political blog, calling Last Week Tonight “very boring” and a “low rated show”.

While the tweet seemed to come out of nowhere, it may have been in response to an article posted on The Hill the day before, discussing Oliver’s recent appearance on CBS This Morning. In a segment called “Laughing Matters”, Oliver discussed the Presidential election, likening it to a “4-year old’s birthday party” and calling it “undeniably long…way too long”. When asked if he was interested in having Trump on the show, Oliver quipped:
I don’t really care about him in any capacity…I don’t really have anything to say to him. He’s said everything he has to say. He has no internal monologue, that man. It’s not like you’re going to find the secret nugget he has been holding back. He’s an open book. That book doesn’t have many interesting words in it.
The Last Week Tonight twitter account responded to Trump’s tweet, confirming that they had not asked Trump to appear.
A couple of points…
1. Yes, we have a boring show.
2. At no point did we invite Donald Trump to appear on it.https://t.co/qjpg9FLb0V— Last Week Tonight (@LastWeekTonight) November 1, 2015
What do you think? It’s a safe bet to assume that Trump is, once again, lying. The fact that his tweet came a full day after The Hill article on Oliver’s CBS This Morning appearance certainly indicates that Trump is lashing out against someone he dislikes in the only way he knows how, with insults.
