More than 200 women have come together in a class action lawsuit against Guthy-Renker and WEN by Chaz Dean.
WEN is a hair care range that is often advertised with infomercials, and celebrities such as Alyssa Milano and Brooke Shields have served as spokeswomen. The cult favorite is billed as a sulfate-free product that takes the place of shampoo, conditioner, detangler and more.
Though WEN certainly has its fans, there have also been controversial stories seen around the internet with claims that the product causes hair to fall out and cause bald spots.
This lawsuit, which includes women in 40 different states, was filed in California Federal Court, and it claims that the WEN product line can cause possible permanent damage including breakage, bald spots, rash and scalp irritation. However, when looking at reviews for the product, for every hair horror story about WEN, there are just as many women who claim the product works exactly as it should.
In fact, WEN is regularly takes the #1 spot on Amazon for hair care, and the product has brought in millions in revenue for Guthy-Renker, the company that produces the product. Additionally, the creator of the product, Chaz Dean, is nearly as famous as his celeb clients.
Which ingredients are causing the damage? As of now, no one knows, but WEN routinely makes claims about the gentle, holistic formula that is used to create it. The lawsuit alleges, however, that there are a number of harsh chemicals, caustic ingredients and allergens contained in the product.
As of now, Guthy-Renker denies that WEN is causing this damage, but has hired an independent lab to look into it. Of course, the plaintiffs are doing the same. It makes things more complicated when there are many knock-offs of the product, and “fake” WEN is found all over the internet. Additionally, there are different versions of the product, and the one sold by Guthy-Renker is slightly different than the one sold by both QVC and Chaz Dean’s own website, so it may be difficult to find the culprit causing the harm.
