Emma Watson Kicks Off 2016 With A Book Club

If you’re interested in feminism, equality, or just Hermione Granger, you might be interested in joining Emma Watson’s new book club. Check out how here!

Do you like Emma Watson, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, feminism, and/or books? If you like at least one of these things, then Emma’s latest project is probably made for you. You can join Emma Watson’s new book club!

You’re probably asking ‘how?’ at this point, but, just as long as you use and have access to the internet, you’re all set to go. Having a Twitter account is helpful but optional. This book club is for anyone to join. You don’t have to be Taylor Swift or J.K. Rowling — both were invited to join — but it is pretty darn cool to be part of a celebrity’s book club.

Recently on Twitter (this is where having a Twitter account is useful), the British actress and UN Women’s Ambassador asked her worldwide team to come up with a name for her book club.

Some favorites include: “S.P.E.W.,” “Hermione’s Army,” “Em’s Femmes,” and “The Society of the Promotion of Empowered Women.”

With such a list, it could seem like choosing a club name would be rather difficult. However, she chose “Our Shared Shelf,” and personally, I believe that it represents the purpose of the club quite well. For me, Hermione’s Army would have been a close second.

On her GoodReads page, Watson shares with us the origins and rules of her project:

“As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on, There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I wanted to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.

“The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the month’s last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some question/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you and all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation. If you fancy it, please join up and participate. Everyone is welcome. I would be so honoured!”

Speaking of books, she’s already chosen “My Life on the Road,” a memoir written by Gloria Steinem, an activist, organizer, and inspiring leader. A New York Times Bestseller, Steinem discusses how her parents and her travels created her into the person she is today. Not bad for a first book, right?

Even Steinem is pretty excited, too.

You might want to grab some snacks and a blanket — this club is going to stick around for a while.
