NHL All-Star John Scott Discusses Poor Treatment From League

The website does something interesting; it takes players and lets them share their stories, instead of having the reporter’s do it. Here, they let players share stories of what it’s like to play in the big leagues, their first game, how they’ve overcome adverse situations or even how they’ve overcome hard times in their lives.

Today, NHL All-Star John Scott, who was cut from NHL rosters three times, shared his story in an article titled “A Guy Like Me.”

Before we start off, let’s go over what exactly happened and who Scott is. He’s a goon, a fourth-line enforcer who played for the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL. When he was voted as an All-Star captain, he was traded to Montreal and sent down to the AHL, which would make him ineligible to play.

After backlash from the fans who voted him in, Scott was reinstated into the All-Star game, but rumors swarmed that the league and the Coyotes organization had planned the trade to ensure that Scott wouldn’t be able to participate in the festivities.

In his piece, John Scott confirms it. He starts off by explaining that as he was showing his teammates some of his all-star gear, the general manager pulled himself aside and told him that he had been traded. Scott then explains that enforcers like him don’t get traded while the team is winning. There was a deeper cause of the problem.

“I try not to think about how young my daughters are, and how much they’ll hate the move,” Scott writes. “Or about the stress it will place on my wife, who is nine months pregnant with twins.”

It’s a sad story, and he goes on to discusses his path to the NHL and how the league and his own organization’s front office treated him. It’s a tough thing to consider, but wow, what a story. Much respect to him.
