Welcome back to another edition of Agent Carter’s Closet where I assemble outfits based on the costumes seen every week on Marvel’s Agent Carter. I do my best to put together ensembles that are off-the-rack, affordable, available in a variety of sizes and capture the essence of Peggy Carter so that you can infuse your wardrobe with a little vintage flair. It can be a challenging task sometimes due to the fact that all of Peggy’s outfits on the show are designed and created by Giovanna Melton and her amazing creative costuming team. But on the bright side, research has never been so fun!
This week, we’re taking a look at some of the fabulous costumes in “The Atomic Job.” Agent Carter goes undercover and breaks into a morgue with Jarvis, all while looking amazing! So we’re putting together her undercover secretary and morgue B&E outfits along with the guest star “Pink Bombshell Secretary” (Alexandra Vino) as an added bonus!
Sometimes I get lucky with an outfit and find an item that really sells it as a tribute. More and more, I’m finding that my luck is usually in the shoes and this outfit was no different. After a couple hours of searching online, I’m 98% certain that I found the shoes Hayley Atwell is wearing when she goes undercover in the episode and they are gorgeous!
Made by Ruby Shoo, the Ashley features a combination jacquard material with faux suede in wine, a woodgrain finish heel and an adorable flower on the toe. The U.K. site ships internationally and the shoes are currently on sale at 40% off, about $55 USD. But I feel like I really should warn you, Ruby Shoo not only makes stunning shoes but they also create matching handbags for each pair…so shop at the peril of your own bank account.
For the rest of the outfit, I found the blouse on another amazing U.K. website called The Seamstress Of Bloomsbury. They have a nice selection of very authentic 40’s inspired clothes in a variety of sizes and colors. The Bonnie Blouse is available in cream, red and black. The top is about $56 through their website or $64 if you purchase through their Amazon marketplace. But if you buy through their official website, you get more color variety and sizes on all of their items. International shipping is an extra $7 so the price works out basically the same either way.
The skirt is a simple gored skirt in ruby from Beauty Boutique and costs $32. Peggy is almost wearing a pencil skirt in this scene but not quite; she always needs to maintain easy movement in her legs to allow for the all-important butt-kickings she must administer. The skirt is available in nine different colors and a nice variety of sizes.
And we can’t forget the seamed stockings (or in this case, pantyhose). These are a simple, nude seamed hose and will only cost you $10 through Amazon.
Next up, Peg and Jarvis are at it again as they break into the morgue to steal a body. For this outfit, she’s wearing a gorgeous, deep red blouse with high-waisted navy trousers and heels. Something I’ve found extra-challenging is finding 40’s-style blouses in those beautiful, rich, solid tones that work so well on Hayley Atwell and really pop on the screen. What tends to be available off-the-rack are more pastels and washed-out colors or blouses with some not-so-flattering patterns. And if I find the perfect color, the blouse is the wrong cut has some weird embellishments like ruffles or bows.
For this outfit, I chose a blouse that was a little brighter red but had a gorgeous, vintage feel with loose, long sleeves and cute dome buttons. You can find it at The Seamstress Of Bloomsbury for $57. The blouse is available in ten different colors and patterns, so if the bright red isn’t for you, there are plenty of other choices. The navy, high-waisted trousers are by Banned Apparel, they are available in six colors and will cost you $46. The shoes are from Chase & Chloe and you can get them for $60 at ModCloth. And just in case you come across a vent you need to shimmy inside (because you never know when you’re going to need to steal a body), you can get a pocket-size tool kit with exchangeable slotted and phillips head screwdrivers for only $8 at Amazon.
I decided to put together an outfit around the “Pink Bombshell Secretary” because her look was so different from what Peg normally wears. The pastel colors and form-fitting dress were a fun change of pace during my research. And the vintage straw handbag…we all need one of those.
The dress is the pink Stop Staring! Cupcake Dress and you can pick it up through Amazon for $130. I’m fairly certain it’s the actual dress from the episode although the shade of pink is slightly different in the photograph. The cardigan is a simple, antique floral pattern and is only $31. I found the retro straw basket handbag on Amazon and it has a cute floral lining that adds nicely to the vintage feel. You can get it in three different color options and it costs $68. The shoes are the Journee Liza T-Strap Pump in nude. You can find them at Target for $35. Little tip, if you find you like the Journee shoe line, try to stick to Amazon or Target when you’re shopping; I’ve noticed other department stores tend to charge almost double the amount for the same pair of shoes.
I hope you’re inspired to add some 40’s flair to your closet! Be sure to check out my other posts for more outfits inspired by previous episodes this season! Make sure you tune into ABC every Tuesday night at 9/8c for new episodes of Marvel’s Agent Carter and I’ll be back next week with more Agent Carter’s Closet!
