Last Week Tonight’s Brilliant Cadbury Creme Egg Conspiracy

Last Week Tonight took the night off yesterday, but left us with an incredible Easter treat: a conspiracy video about Cadbury Creme Eggs.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took the night off yesterday, presumably to spend Easter weekend with their families, or at least away from work. Thankfully, they left fans a delightful treat in the form of a new web exclusive video, in which he hilariously discusses the art of YouTube conspiracy videos.

A conspiracy video, for those of you who may be unaware, is a YouTube video containing some exceptionally far fetched versions of what their creators believe to be the truth. These include JFK assassination theories, moon landing faking theories, and one that was popularized earlier this year alleging that Katy Perry is JonBennet Ramsey all grown up. To critical minds, these videos can seem pretty far-fetched, but there are plenty of people who believe them to be the absolute truth.

Host John Oliver spoke about these theories, calling them “science fiction for people who don’t understand they’re watching science fiction”, and stated that he was jealous he couldn’t come up with anything that was equally as funny. Oliver said that one of the keys to a successful conspiracy theory is “an eye for incredibly specific detail and an ability to make wild accusations with complete confidence”.

In order to capitalize on the popularity of conspiracy videos, Oliver and the team at Last Week Tonight made their own. The subject: Cadbury Creme Eggs.  He accurately states that “the Cadbury Creme Egg is a terrible candy that tastes like mermaid placenta covered in candle wax” yet they arrive in stores every January “like newly signed gym memberships”. Over the next few minutes, he “follows the money”, and traces the popularity of those Easter treats to the Illuminati.

The segment concludes with Oliver giving the audience a moment “because I just blew your fucking mind”.

Watch the web exclusive below, and let us know what you think in the comments! Do you love these chocolate treats, or do you agree that they are The Worst? Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returns next Sunday on HBO at 11:00 pm with an all-new episode.
