The internet is a powerful thing. It connects people in ways that were at one time only imaginable. Today, we can all connect, engage and share our lives with individuals on the other side of the world.
But that’s not all the internet has helped do. Through music and sites such as YouTube, it’s given a voice and a face to many talents who may have otherwise never have been discovered. It has allowed individuals to share their passions and gifts with the world, and in turn, inspire others to do the same.
One particular network which has assisted in this perhaps more than any other is that of DanceOn, a YouTube company co-founded by the Queen of pop herself, Madonna.
Described as “the next generation programming brand celebrating music and dance in pop culture”, DanceOn has a global, multi-cultural reach and has established itself as a top platform for the creation and sharing of dance and music content. To date, videos created via the DanceOn network have been viewed more than five billion times on YouTube, has 30+ million subscribers and 75 million fans and followers.
One such video that has captivated viewers is that which details the story of Shaheem Sanchez who lost his hearing at the age of four. Rather than letting his impairment get him down, he taught himself to dance by feeling the vibrations of the music he listened to.
The video sees him dancing to Oh Wonder’s “Lose It”, an emotive and powerful number that represents the challenges Shaheem and many others like him have overcome with help from the power of music. It is also an inspiring demonstration of how when life throws you an unexpected curve-ball, it doesn’t have to knock you down, but can instead build you up.
