JoJo Talks Confidence, Record Label Control, And Diet Pills With PopSugar

Singer JoJo is currently on a media tour and during a stop with PopSugar she reflected on battles with her previous record label. Get the scoop here!

Teen pop phenomenon JoJo recently opened up about taking dietary supplements to help with weight loss during the early days of her career.

The “Too Little Too Late” hit-maker revealed that between the ages of 18 and 19 she was forced by her previous record label to take injections in order to help her “lose weight fast.”

The 25-year-old singer who rose to fame after releasing her chart topping hit single “Leave (Get out)” in 2004 told PopSugar in an episode of Pretty Unfiltered:

“I was under a lot of pressure from a company that I was previously working with, and they wanted me to lose weight fast.

So they got me with a nutritionist and had me on all these supplements and I was injecting myself. This is a common thing that girls do.”

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.”

The Aquamarine star explained that the injections tricked her body into thinking it needed less calories to function; this unfortunately led the singer to eat less than 500 calories a day.

She continued: “This was the most unhealthy thing I’ve ever done and then I gained all the weight back, I felt terrible about myself, and I was upset that I even subscribed to the standard that they wanted me to be at.”

JoJo admits that her prime reason for taking the supplements was because she feared that her record label would not put out her album if she refused to comply. Despite giving into their demands, the album was never released.

The singer also mentioned that despite being confident on the outside, like most people, “there are also things that can get to me.”

However, JoJo claims that after turning the big 21, she began to feel more comfortable within herself.

JoJo, real name Joana Levesque, is currently opening for Fifth Harmony on their 7/27 Tour and plans to release new music later this year. She kicked off an album campaign with the release of new single “Fuck Apologies” last week!
