While FUNimation’s major announcements were scarce at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, one big piece of news brought excitement to panel goers. On Thursday evening, FUNimation Entertainment announced that the hit anime series Ergo Proxy will finally be released on Blu-ray for the first time in North America. Ergo Proxy’s Blu-ray release is in no way a random happenstance – this Blu-ray release marks the anime classic’s 10th anniversary.
Ergo Proxy first premiered on February 25, 2006 and ran for a total of 23 episodes. Produced by studio Manglobe, who is also the studio behind hits such as Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy became a cult classic and is still regarded by many fans, including myself, as a must-watch piece of anime history.
Funimation was not the first company to release the series on DVD; Geneon Entertainment Inc. first gained the license for Ergo Proxy and released it on DVD in late 2006 – early 2007.
Funimation describes the plot of Ergo Proxy, on their website, as the following:
“The domed city of Romdo is supposed to be perfect, but Re-l Mayer, a young female inspector from the Civilian Intelligence Office, knows better. In this place where humans and robots coexist, she receives a strange message – something is awakening. Re-l is thrown into the middle of the mystery when she is brutally attacked by a deformed monster of unknown origin and saved by an equally enigmatic figure. Mayer’s struggle to follow the dark threads connecting these incidents forces the young woman to venture from the safety of Romdo and into the desolate lands beyond.”
No information regarding the exact release date for the Blu-ray set was revealed, and I’m guessing the anime will also get some sort of a limited edition or collector’s item release, which has been a popular release method for Funimation as of late with series such as Tokyo Ghoul, Seraph of the End and Fullmetal Alchemist. Guess we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for more details!
