Former Charmed One and 90210 alumna Shannen Doherty’s cancer has spread. The actress was originally diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes, but later found that some of the cancer cells had escaped the nodes, prompting her doctors to start her on chemo and radiation therapy.

“I had breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, and from one of my surgeries we discovered that some of the cancer cells might have actually gone out of the lymph nodes. So for that reason, we are doing chemo, and then after chemo, I’ll do radiation,” Doherty revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “The unknown is always the scariest part. Is the chemo going to work? Is the radiation going to work?” she continued. “Everything else is manageable. Pain is manageable, you know, living without a breast is manageable. It’s the worry of your future and how your future is going to affect the people that you love.”

Although Doherty’s doctors diagnosed her in February 2015 and she had a single mastectomy, the cancer has not gone away completely. However, Doherty is attempting to remain strong, not just for herself but for her fans.

She even shared her post-surgery experience.

“[The doctor] didn’t want me to wake up with absolutely nothing. It was very important to him that I didn’t have that experience, and so, he put an expander in, so I have a tiny something there. It’s cute and sometimes we fill it up and make it bigger, and sometimes we reduce it.”

But these past months have not been easy on Doherty. In her interview, she recalled how she went in for “a traumatic and horrible” post-surgery bra fitting. She shared how she “broke down crying in the dressing room and ran out.”

Despite her struggle, Doherty hopes that her journey will serve as a comfort for other women going through the same thing. She has been documenting her experience via social media, and even posted a photo of herself sans hair on Instagram.

From pixie to mohawk to bandana, Doherty has shown strength and wisdom throughout her journey.
