Marvel To Unhood Darth Maul’s Training With Upcoming Mini-Series

Prepare your Scimitars for another trip to the Prequel era, Maul fans. Marvel will be adding Star Wars: Darth Maul #1-5 to its library in the coming months. Cullen Bunn has been selected for writing duties, while Luke Ross will be handling illustrations.

The series elects the time period leading up to The Phantom Menace as its setting. Brian Truitt of USA Today describes this iteration of Maul as “an untested warrior under the training of Darth Sidious” and a combination of “versions of the Maul audiences have seen into one.” Neither The Phantom Menace nor The Clone WarsAnimated Series explored the Maul-Sidious relationship in minute detail. Marvel’s new series is an opportunity to do exactly that. Bunn explains in the USA Today article that Sidious is “not a very warm teacher,” indicating that the Maul-Sidious relationship will be influenced by what was seen in Legends, in which Sidious was not known for using positive reinforcement on Maul.

Another potentially interesting aspect of the story is that Maul and Sidious won’t be the only student-teacher relationship at play, as Maul will try to turn a Jedi Apprentice named Eldra Kaitis to the dark side.

Thus far, Marvel has been generous to Prequel fans, having included various references to the era in previous titles, plus the Obi-Wan & Anakin mini-series itself. A story dedicated to Darth Maul is an excellent way to continue courting the Prequel fan base. Given this current trajectory, it isn’t unlikely that more stories featuring Prequel characters will follow. Count Dooku or General Grievous would be enticing subjects, given the fact they never had the spotlight to the extent that Maul had during The Clone Wars.

Which Prequel character would you like Marvel to tackle next? Let us know in the poll below.

The release date for Darth Maul #1 is February 2017. In the meantime, check out this spectacular Darth Maul fan film if you haven’t done so already.
