Kate McKinnon Nails Couchgate On SNL

During the Saturday, March 4 episode of Saturday Night Live, the cast tackled one very hot topic: Couchgate. Straying from the typical skits, SNL opted for a recurring visual gag, actress Kate McKinnon reprising her recurring role as President Trump’s White House adviser, Kellyanne Conway, and making appearances throughout the show.

McKinnon, dressed as Conway, first appeared perched atop the “Weekend Updates” desk, playing with her phone as the updates were given.  She then made a surprise appearance during a flash to the blue-lit musical stage during the ad breaks where Father John Misty was slated to perform, kneeling and her eyes still glued to the screen of her phone. Her final appearance as Conway was perched on a chair while host Octavia Spencer and cast member Keenan Thompson joked during a skit. The subtle but blatant joke being made was a stark contrast to the usual humor of SNL.

The photo of Conway, President Donald Trump’s White House adviser, went viral earlier in the week. Depicting her kneeling on an Oval Office couch tapping away at her phone during a meeting with representatives from historically black colleges, her etiquette and respect for the Oval Office was brought into question, and the controversy has since been dubbed Couchgate.

“We had the largest gathering of men and women to date in the Oval Office for a picture. These are the presidents and other leaders within the historically black college and universities and they came to visit the White House…I was being asked to take a picture in a crowded room with the press behind us,” Conway explained during an appearance on FOX’s Lou Dobbs Tonight. “I was asked to take a certain angle and was doing exactly that. I certainly meant no disrespect, I didn’t mean to have my feet on the couch.”
