According to a recent report by the Los Angeles Times, 1986’s popular action film Top Gun is finally getting a sequel. On an episode of the Australian morning talk show Sunrise which aired earlier this week, Tom Cruise confirmed that Top Gun 2 is already in the works.
“It’s happening. It’s definitely happening,” a smiling Cruise told Sunrise anchors when they asked about circulating rumors, “I’m gonna start filming it probably in the next year.”

In the original Top Gun, Cruise’s character, Lieutenant Pete Mitchell (a.k.a. “Maverick”), was an arrogant young navy fighter pilot who enters California’s competitive military flight program, “TOPGUN,” in order to prove his worth as a skilled, yet risk-loving, pilot. Now, 30 years later, Cruise will revive the character of Maverick for the upcoming sequel.
Specific plot details have yet to be annnounced, but healthy skepticism has already set in for many fans of the iconic 80s film. Most of the original Top Gun stars such as Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Michael Ironside, and Anthony Edwards are well-aged at this point, and not all of them managed to keep up with Cruise’s youthful charm.
Additionally, there are alot of minor details that have changed since the original film’s premiere. For instance, Miramar’s Naval Air Station was transferred to the Marine Corps. in 1999, and the TOPGUN program, while still in existence, has since moved to New Jersey.
Obviously, many key plot points will need to be carefully manipulated by Hollywood executives in order to create an sensible film. Perhaps Maverick has since risen through the naval ranks to become a Commander, and the sequel’s plot will take the somewhat-cliché “student has become the teacher” format going forward.
Going on Cruise’s word, the film is set to begin filming sometime in 2018. Beyond that however, no details have been revealed. For now, fans of the Top Gun franchise will have to stay on the look out for details yet to come.
