An Inconvenient Sequel is getting a timely update. The film, former Vice President Al Gore’s follow-up to his groundbreaking 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, will be updated to include this week’s news of President Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris global climate agreement. Paramount, the studio releasing the documentary, has announced that the film will be edited to include this news and pushed back slightly to an August 4 release date.
The documentary focuses on the efforts that led to the historic 2015 Paris climate agreement coming together. An Inconvenient Sequel already included footage of then-candidate Trump mocking global warming, as well as updated footage acknowledging the 2016 U.S. election results. On Twitter, Gore released a statement expressing his disappointment with this week’s news and standing in firm opposition to the current administration’s position:

The sequel’s directors, Bonnie Cohen and Jon Shenk, also shared a stern but hopeful message in a statement released to the press, “…We filmed behind-the-scenes in Paris to show the hard work, finesse, and passion that went into making the agreement happen. We hope that the hard work of those who made the deal happen will not be in vain. The good news is that there is a great deal to be hopeful about. The technology exists to create enough clean energy for the world economy and to avoid total climate catastrophe. Now that President Trump is pledging to do less to keep America’s commitment to the world, we must all step up to do more to ensure the health of our planet.”
When it was released in 2006, An Inconvenient Truth sparked a global dialogue and movement about combatting the looming threat of climate change. The film won a slew of awards, including the 2007 Oscars for Best Documentary, Features and Best Original Song (for “I Need to Wake Up” by Melissa Etheridge). Gore also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, along with the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for his work in raising public awareness about man-made climate change.
An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power opens in theaters nationwide on August 4.
