A Review Of Cardi B’s ‘Bodak Yellow’

Here’s why “Bodak Yellow” is the summertime song of 2017.

Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” brings female empowerment, bravado, and bass to the stage.

From riding camels to petting a cheetah, the rapper’s surrounded by Dubai’s sand and sun, and for good reason. Her track’s fire. In the opening scene, the beat mimics Kodak Black’s “No Flockin.” Instead of Black’s drugged, slurred verses, B puts a spin on his flow in her own rap. Unlike Black’s laid-back tone, B emphasizes her attitude and authority. “Said little b—-, you can’t f— with me/If you wanted to/These expensive, these is red bottoms/These is bloody shoes,” she spits. Like Black, she’s reinforcing her position of power. However, unlike Black’s scratchy vocals, her unwavering confidence matches the beat’s uptempo pace. With more lyrics about how she can buy anything, sleep with anyone, and “make money moves,” she’s provoking her haters with one clear, concise message: I’m a boss.

Sitting atop her throne next to a chained cheetah, B’s verses transform from expected braggadocio to full-fledged savagery. She raps, “I might just chill with your boo/I might just feel on your babe/My p—- feel like a lake/He wanna swim with his face/I’m like okay.” Not only are the lyrics cutthroat, but so are B’s tone and flow. She went crazy. Even Blac Chyna purposefully played the song while flashing her jewelry on Snapchat. Obviously, B’s influence reaches past a fandom. However, any young woman can enjoy the song.

In the midst of slut-shaming often found in rap (a male-dominated field), B uplifts her fellow bad b—— in a song that praises their beauty, success, and strength. Whether they’re dancing to “Bodak Yellow” at the club, in their room, or on Snapchat, B’s officially released the summer jam everyone needs to buy.

Move over, Joseline Hernandez. B’s coming for your spot.
