A lot of things happened in the Season 7 premier episode of Game of Thrones, plenty of dramatic and epic moments. But a certain ginger pop star stole the show with a small appearance. As we expected, Ed Sheeran made his cameo in the fantasy series.
The appearance of music stars in Game of Thrones, is not really new. Will Champion of Coldplay appeared in the third season as part of the band that played the “Rains of Castamere” at the Red Wedding. Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody played for Roose Bolton’s men during the fourth season while Sigur Ros pereformed at the Purple Wedding.
It is worth noting that the chart toppers all played musicians, and Ed Sheeran is no exception, kind of.
Ed Sheeran actually portrays a soldier who just happens to have a beautiful voice. Arya (Maisie Williams) hears him singing while she is riding through a forest. She approaches the singer who is now joined in song by his companions, soldiers of House Lannister who are sitting around a campfire.

Unlike the cameos of the other musicians, this is not subtle. Ed Sheeran is notable, gets a few close ups, and is granted a few lines. There is also an important meaning hidden behind the song he sings.
And being the biggest pop star of the moment, people on Twitter reacted with delight (or disdain) on Twitter.
Twitter reacts to Ed Sheeran’s cameo
Some made use of his song lyrics:

The club isn’t the best place to find a lover, so the Riverlands is where I go…” pic.twitter.com/0EvQHRODnN— ∞ Aoife Mairéad ? (@TriggerHippieTV) July 17, 2017
Only way to justify Ed Sheeran’s #GameOfThrones cameo is for him to greet Bran with: “When your legs don’t work like they used to before…”

While others made fun of his pop star status.
