Well, not permanently banned, but at least from performing. Bieber and his team are calling his Purpose Tour a “world apology tour” in an attempt to show Bieber’s more mature side to his growing fan base. But China may not be part of that fan base for much longer.
According to The New York Times, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture has confirmed that the singer has been barred from performing in China because of his past behavior. This past behavior includes performances in China and other countries.
Looks like our Biebs has some work to do.
Fans flocked to the Bureau’s website, asking why the “Baby” singer was not allowed to perform for them.
“Justin Bieber is a gifted singer, but he is also a controversial young foreign singer,” the Bureau responded. “In order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers. We hope that as Justin Bieber matures, he can continue to improve his own words and actions, and truly become a singer beloved by the public.”
In 2013, Bieber was photographed being carried up the Great Wall of China by his bodyguards. That same trip, Bieber skateboarded through Beijing while being chased by his bodyguards.
In 2014, Bieber “caused a minor diplomatic row” after he posted photos of himself at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, Japan, a place of honor for the Japanese war dead.
Although the “Sorry” singer has tried to apologize, many were outraged by the incident, and found it very distasteful. The Foreign Ministry of China says he hopes Bieber “can learn more about the history of Japanese militarism, and the wrongful historical and militaristic views promoted by the shrine after his visit.”
Bieber joins a growing list of Western performers blacklisted in China. The list includes Lady Gaga, who had her entire setlist banned after meeting with the Dalai Lama to discuss inner peace.
No word yet on how long Bieber will be banned from performing in China.
