CAUTION: THERE ARE MINOR SPOILERS BELOW FOR OPEN WATER (2003) AND OPEN WATER 2: ADRIFT (2006).
Hey shark fans! Did you know that there is an Open Water 3 (2017)? Well there is! It’s called Open Water 3: Cage Dive, and apparently it’s coming to select theaters and on demand next month.
In the wake of another shark cage dive movie known as 47 Meters Down (2017) that we received a little over a month ago this summer, it’s been over ten years since Open Water 2: Adrift, and even longer since the original Open Water.
I had no idea this was even coming. In fact, I was recently watching the original and happened to see this third film that I did not know about on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Luckily, it hasn’t come and gone yet, and we want people to know about it!
What can we expect from Open Water 3?
As far as shark movies go, and movies in general, Open Water may not be the best film technically, but it is usually highly regarded by audiences and critics alike as being an excellent thrill ride. The sequel, which looked better cinematically, had less sharks and more of a cheese factor. This third film looks to be coming back to its roots, and there’s definitely hunting dorsal fins making the rounds here. Of course, none of the same characters and actors are seen in the subsequent movies, because, well, there are different stories of different people to tell, and sadly not all of our protagonists made it out alive in the previous films. Those who did probably learned from their mistakes and aren’t going out in the water anymore.
While this film admittedly does not look as sophisticated as something like Jaws (1975) or The Shallows (2016), it does appear to be a little better than your average Sharknado (2013) movie, with plenty of jumps in the trailer. While it may not be worth rushing to those “select” theaters to see, it still looks for a fun ride watching it on demand. Maybe it will close out the trilogy on a high note. If you’re like this writer, almost any summer shark movie is intriguing in some respect.
Open Water 3: Cage Dive will star Joel Hogan, Josh Potthoff, Megan Peta Hill, Pete Valley, Mark Fell, and Christopher Callen, and submerges into select theaters (and on demand) on August 11th, 2017.
Check out the nerve-wracking trailer below, set to a haunting “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”
