The iconic hero Jean Grey is finally back on the pages of Marvel Comics, and our fanboy/fangirl hearts are nearly ready to burst.

 

For decades, fans of the X-Men or Marvel titles as a whole have known about the immensely powerful, charming and beloved character of Jean Grey. Originally filling the role of a heavy hitter, Jean became a character that introduced a cosmic force that ravaged universes for complete power and destruction – finding Jean as a perfect candidate to host this “Phoenix Force.” Jean ultimately lost her life battling the Phoenix to save her comrades, spending years either deceased or seemingly recovering in an afterlife of sorts known as the “white-hot room.”

 

Now, several years after the demise of the powerful hero, Jean Grey is back in Phoenix Resurrection – but before we jump into a gleeful state of sheer happiness, let’s talk about what we learned in the first issue of the miniseries. The series opens up with a glimpse at multiple anomalies that have taken place in three separate places, sending the X-Men into a concerned frenzy as it is apparent that the places are all locations tied back to Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force. The X-Men teams are led by Kitty Pryde and Rogue (a nice growth from where things were the last time we saw Jean) and the stakes feel mysteriously high as children are found levitating, comatose, and near death. We don’t quite see anyone speak of her immediately, but the connection to locations and untapped power has left the remaining X-Men veterans anxious to say the least.

 

Though Jean isn’t the most present in the first issue, the build-up to her return makes it worth the while with suspense and ambiguity that make it feel like a true X-Men comic at heart. We may know from announcements and the obvious title that Jean Grey has been brought back to the comic book universe, but the title manages to keep a few secrets that are revealed in the first issue that will shock fans. Let’s just say that for those of you who are hoping to see other lost heroes appear in the near future – a connection to the Phoenix Force could make it a reality as it just has in the final pages of the first issue.

 

In previous titles, the idea of Jean, Phoenix and those effected by the entity have been toyed around with but this particular title manages to shed an ominous light on what it has planned. After the death of time displaced Jean, return of real Jean and her attachment to the force – we can guarantee the Phoenix is cooking up something deadly for the X-Men and its primary host Jean. Overall, fans of the X-Men comics should enjoy the introduction to this game changing story and casual fans will have a perfect opportunity to dive into a plot that will almost certainly shake up the Marvel universe as we know it.
