‘Murphy Brown’ Reboot Headed To CBS

‘Murphy Brown’ is coming back to CBS this fall—with Candice Bergen!

Murphy Brown is ready to get back to work.

CBS has announced that its classic 90's series will be returning for the 2018-2019 television season—and Candice Bergen is on board! Over the course of its decade-long run (1988-1998), Murphy Brown gave viewers a smart, sharp, and very funny snapshot of life behind the scenes of the television news business. Murphy was outspoken, ambitious, driven, and a pioneering female character on TV. The show won a total of 18 Emmys, five of which went to Bergen.

As the titular character, Bergen took on everything from side-hustling secretaries to, most famously, then-Vice President Dan Quayle, who publicly denounced the fictional character's choice to be a single mother on the show. Blending elements of the real-life drama into the series, Murphy responded to Quayle on her news magazine show, "FYI": "Perhaps it’s time for the vice president to expand his definition and recognize that, whether by choice or circumstance, families come in all shapes and sizes. And, ultimately, what really defines a family is commitment, caring, and love." The 1992 episode logged 70 million viewers.

No word yet on whether Bergen's co-stars in the series (Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto, Grant Shaud, and Charles Kimbrough) will be returning for the reboot. (Co-stars Robert Pastorelli and Pat Corley passed away in 2004 and 2006, respectively.) But Diane English, who created the original show, and Bergen are executive-producing the new 13-episode iteration.

Look for new Murphy Brown episodes later this year!
