Tom Hanks To Star In Mr. Rogers Biopic ‘You Are My Friend’

Tom Hanks will star as TV icon Fred Rogers in the biopic “You Are My Friend.”

Tom Hanks Cast As Fred Rogers

Tom Hanks is set to star in You Are My Friend, a Mr. Rogers biopic from Secret Diary Of A Teenage Girl director Marielle Heller.

The movie, written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, is inspired by the real-life friendship between TV icon Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod, who begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on Rogers and finds his perspective on life transformed.

Director Heller told Variety that the script impressed her “with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit.”

Hannah Minghella, president of TriStar Pictures who won the rights to distribute the film, added, “This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite.”

No word yet on who will be co-starring as Tom Junod, but TriStar already seems to be on the right track by casting Tom Hanks, universally accepted to be America’s Dad, as Mr. Rogers. It’s the kind of casting choice that makes you smack your head and go, “OF COURSE.”

Production on You Are My Friend is scheduled to begin in the fall.
